AUDITION MASTERCLASS

HOW DOES IT WORK?

An artist will travel to your theatre and spend the day working with your performers masterclass-style. Working in depth on vocal technique, acting through song, monologue work, text analysis, characterization, scene work, and much more. Each performer will individually perform and receive feedback on their chosen material. A masterclass is also customizable to work on audition material, 32-bar song cuts or 1-minute monologues. It can also be used to help prepare performers audition for a specific upcoming show.

  • In a “standard” class, students prepare 32-bar audition cuts of a musical theatre song, with sheet music, marked, and ready to perform and receive feedback from the artist. Artists will listen, give critical feedback, and have the performer repeat the cut by implementing the notes given.

  • Class emphases may vary: acting through song, vocal technique, character song scene work, etc.

  • Classes may have themes. i.e. a monologue class, a pop/rock class, traditional musical theatre class, etc.

  • Number of performers should be limited to 10-12 participants in a 3-hour period.

HOW DO WE PREPARE?

Preparation for masterclasses can vary based on structure, but in general, advise your performers to come with a small book of familiar songs. They may not sing more than 1 or 2, but artists frequently ask for different choices.

  • Performers should have a small book of songs in which they are very familiar. Variety and age/ type appropriate songs are encouraged.

  • All songs presented should have 16 and 32 bar cuts marked clearly.

  • Sheet music should be in the correct key, hole punched, double sided, and inside a binder.

ACCOMPANIMENT

In general, live piano accompaniment is expected for audition masterclasses. In some cases, tracks may be used.
